Traveling from Naval to Surigao was one of the journeys I took when I was young.
It’s a long trip, especially in December when the country is known for its unpredictable weather, with sudden downpours and cloudy skies.
But that didn’t stop me from embarking on this exciting journey.
Although this wasn’t my first time traveling alone, this trip presented unique challenges and surprises.
Let me take you through my adventure with some tips as we travel from the island paradise of Biliran to Surigao as a commuter.
Key Takeaways
- There are two routes you can take to get to Surigao- via Tacloban and via Ormoc.
- Budget around Php 1,896 for transportation from Naval to Cantilan, Surigao del Sur via Ormoc, with room for extra expenses.

- Upgrade your ferry ticket for more comfortable seating during the 3-4 hour ride.
The Duptours Van Ride From Naval to Ormoc
There are two main routes if you plan a trip from Naval to Surigao. The first option winds through Tacloban, while the second takes you through Ormoc City, which I prefer.
Ormoc City is also one of the key routes to get to Biliran, as well outside of Region VIII.
After paying Php200.00 and boarding the Duptours Van in Naval, Biliran, I couldn’t shake off the dizziness and possible motion sickness. We haven’t left yet, and I’m about to throw up! Yikes!
Ever the prepared traveler, I had my trusty plastic bag ready, just in case. I remain determined to embrace the excitement of my upcoming adventure despite the discomfort.
As we traveled along the busy highway, I caught a glimpse of the road that leads to Talabahan sa Omas.
Arriving in Ormoc City
Naval to Ormoc City is about 1.5 to two hours, with smooth roads and lovely sceneries. It’s much shorter compared to the Naval-Tacloban route.
Surprisingly, I arrived without any incidents of nausea, and it was a great relief. My secret? I slept the whole trip!
Eager to continue my journey, I approached the terminal staff to inquire about the arrival and departure times of the Bachelor Express Bus.
He assured me that the bus would arrive in just a few minutes, setting the stage for the next leg of my solo travel.

Waiting at Ormoc Terminal
Before the scheduled departure of 2 pm, I grabbed a take-out lunch from McDonald’s and enjoyed it inside the bus.
I also couldn’t resist the temptation to purchase some local pasalubong, like Chocolate Moron, Binagol, and Peanut Roll.
At 2 pm, the bus conductor distributed our tickets, confirming our destinations. Although the bus headed to Davao, I would get off at Surigao City Bus Terminal.
Trip from Ormoc City to Surigao City
Before leaving the terminal, I was pleasantly surprised when the driver played a prayer on the bus TV monitor.
The bus also had a GPS tracking system for added security and a well-maintained comfort room.
We had a bunch of stopovers as we disembarked passengers, and we picked up a few as well. There were stunning sceneries along the way, too.
Looking at the image below, the bus takes a long route as it proceeds along the southernmost part of Leyte before heading to the Port of Liloan.

Waiting Time at Liloan Port
To get to Surigao City, all vehicles must cross the sea via ferries. Thus, we disembarked the bus and paid for the ferry ride, which was Php490.00, including the terminal fee.
Like many trips involving boats and ferries, I waited for the ferry for almost three hours due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Luckily, there was a canteen near the port where I had a hearty rice meal, a hot cup of noodles, and refreshing water.
This unexpected delay allowed me to recover my strength and appreciate the surroundings.
Ferry Ride Liloan to Surigao City
Finally, at midnight (I started at 9:30 am in Naval, Biliran), the port staff gave us the signal that the ferry was ready.
There were many buses similar to the one I rode, so I took a picture of the one I was with.
The voyage would take 3-4 hours to reach Surigao City Port, as we were on a Fast Cat Ferry.
Since the economy seating was exposed to strong winds, I upgraded my seat for an additional 48 Pesos, allowing me to sleep well during the voyage.
If you love sightseeing, going out on deck offers a unique view of the coasts while letting your thoughts wonder with the sound of the waves hitting the hull
Arriving in Surigao City
We arrived at Surigao City Port, greeted by rainy weather. It also took an additional 25 minutes for the ferry to dock safely.
The unloading process began with buses and trucks alighting first before the passengers.
Excitement filled the air as I sat inside the bus, knowing I was just moments away from reaching Surigao City Bus Terminal.
Journey to Cantilan
Upon arriving at Surigao City Bus Terminal, I collected my luggage and prepared for the next leg of my adventure.
I boarded another Bachelor Express Bus, this time an ordinary bus, heading to Tandag. I would drop off in Cantilan, my hometown in Surigao del Sur.
The journey took approximately 3 hours, and heavy rain accompanied us.
The Mining Landscape
En route to Surigao del Sur, the landscape showcased numerous mining companies that had extracted resources from the land. Mining provides many jobs in Surigao del Sur and nearby provinces.
You will also notice the stunning scenery below you as the bus glides along the mountainous roads.
